Villages supported in the Greyton Valley

Once a year, something wonderful happens in Greyton

The roses come into bloom. Garden gates swing open. Visitors arrive from across South Africa and beyond. Restaurants fill. Wine is poured. Friends, old and new, linger beneath oak trees and mountain skies.

And one of the Western Cape’s most beloved village traditions transforms beauty into impact.

For more than 35 years, the Greyton Rose Show and Open Gardens has brought together roses, gardens, hospitality, community spirit and philanthropy in support of Early Childhood Development initiatives across the valley’s six villages. Today, it is believed to be South Africa’s oldest Rose Show and one of the Overberg’s most treasured annual events.

Over the years, funds raised have supported:

  • Early childhood education initiatives
  • Feeding schemes
  • School infrastructure upgrades
  • Educational bursaries
  • Playground development
  • Equipment for local schools

Gorgeous Greyton — how do your gardens grow?

Nestled in the foothills of the Riviersonderend Mountains, Greyton is loved for its historic cottages, nature reserve, mountain trails, cafés, restaurants, wine farms, country charm and village atmosphere.

It attracts passionate gardeners, rose enthusiasts, weekend travellers, food lovers, families, and those simply seeking a slower, more beautiful way to spend a late October weekend.

For one special weekend each year, the village opens its gates and transforms into something even more extraordinary — a community united by beauty, generosity and the joy of giving back.

ECD beneficiaries & the Valley Umbrella Group

Valley ECD Umbrella Group

The Valley ECD Umbrella Group

The Valley ECD Umbrella Group is a caring network of early childhood development practitioners, teachers, support organisations, and community members united by a shared passion for young children and their families. The group meets regularly to learn from one another, share resources, organise workshops and events, and work together to strengthen the quality of early childhood development throughout the Valley.

The group exists to support and uplift those working with young children, encouraging collaboration and providing opportunities for personal and professional growth. Through mutual support and a strong sense of community, members aim to ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.

Despite the dedication of practitioners, many centres face significant challenges — inadequate facilities, limited resources, food insecurity, and the daily pressures faced by families. The centres have identified practical needs that make a meaningful difference: nutritious food, stationery and books, hygiene products, playground equipment, classroom improvements, IT resources and professional development.

“Thank you so much for the great news! We will use the money wisely. Now our kids can go on their field trip to Wonderland in Hermanus. Yippeee… I can see the excitement on their faces when I tell them on Monday that we are going.”

Vrolike Vinkies Day Care

“A true note of thanks from every person involved with The Valley ECD Umbrella Group for the incredibly generous donation. The funds will help to cover ongoing transport, paper, printing and workshop costs, and outings or treats for all members of the Group.”
